COUPLES GROUPS
Couples Groups focus on problems existing in the
relationship between two people. In a group setting, Dr.
Alonso, employing the help of the group members, identifies
the conflict areas affecting each couple’s relationship.
The group experience is very different than individual
counseling. Besides the obvious difference of numbers, the
framework of a group provides support in the experience that
you are not alone in dealing with relationship problems.
The emotional climate of the group is one of psychological
safety. It is a place where we all can learn about how
relationships work. Non-judgmental feedback is used to help
participants listen and communicate more effectively. It is
an educational setting as well, where readings are discussed
and analyzed.
Some people are anxious about participating in group
counseling because they don’t want others besides the
psychologist to know about their difficulties. Group members
agree to maintain confidentiality and not discuss
information shared in the group with others outside. In
addition, this couples group is psycho-educational in nature
and members are free to not reveal intimate personal
information.
The group is time-limited. The initial “contract” is for
twelve meetings, ninety minutes each, every other week.
Sessions will take place at The
Center on Saturdays or on evenings during the week. Once
the group starts, it will meet at the same time every other
week, unless the group unanimously agrees to a different
time.
Dr. Alonso will first interview couples wishing to join the
group. The group will be limited to five couples.
The total cost for all twelve meetings is $480 per
individual. Insurance benefits may cover as much as 80%.
