The Structure of Scientific Revolutions by Thomas S. Kuhn

Kuhn coined the phrase "paradigmatic shift".  In this book he explains the concept.  His explanation of how discovery and change takes place not only applies to scientific discovery and cultural change but also to how individual change takes place.
